What the ancient’s knew about Geometry

The great pyramid of Giza is considered to be one of the 7 wonders of the world. Although there are lots of theories and speculation; to this day, no one knows for a certainty how it was constructed, how the stones were cut and moved, or even why the pyramid was built.

Since 1921 it has been believed that the Great Pyramid was the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu. We don’t have time to go into detail about this tonight, but recent information (though not definitive) throws this in doubt.

What is known about the great pyramid is that it is a geometric and mathematical wonder. We know that the pyramid demonstrates an understanding of Pi, and the golden ratio.

Now bear with me for a bit, because I’m going to throw some numbers at you. These numbers are important. First, does anyone know where the units of “miles”, “seconds” and “inches” came from??? We may find out… Here are the numbers….

The radius of the sun = 432,000 miles

A radius (as we all know) is half the diameter of any circle or sphere. If we divide half the sun’s diameter (It’s radius) by 10 we get 43,200.

There are 43,200 seconds in half of an earth day. Which makes for a really interesting relationship between the earth and the sun. We all know The Earth is wider at the equator than at the poles. This will become important in a bit.

But, what we’re talking about here is the great pyramid. Right?

The Great Pyramid is situated on bedrock. Because of this, the Great Pyramid doesn’t need a foundation. Even so, the Great Pyramid sits on a base called a “socle”. This socle is 1 royal cubit (20.8”) thick. For a long time no one knew what this socle was for. It’s possible this was done to demonstrate the unit of measure used by the Egyptians to build the Great Pyramid. But, then again maybe not. In any event, we use feet and inches today, so that is the unit of measure we’re going to use. The socle is about 5’ wider than the sides of the pyramid.

Now, remember the numbers that I gave you before….

The South side of the Great Pyramid (including the socle) is 760.9 feet …or 1/43,200^{th} the diameter of the Earth at the equator.

But the Great Pyramid isn’t located at the equator…

The South side of the Great Pyramid measured without the socle is 755.85 feet. This is 1/43,200^{th} the diameter of the Earth when measured at the same latitude where the Great Pyramid is located.

The height of the Great Pyramid is 482.75’ which is 1/43,200^{th} the polar diameter of the earth.

These measurements together mean that the Great Pyramid of Giza is an exact scale model of the dimensions of the Earth.

But there’s more… Most people know that the Western side of the Great Pyramid is aligned exactly to true north. We assume the pyramid is square. After all, if the ancients could build such a vast structure with such exactitude, then they should easily be able to make it square. But it’s not.

The North and South sides of the Great Pyramid (at It’s base) are parallel to each other and to the Earth’s equator. But, the East and West sides are not parallel. Why not? Well, we know that the West side is aligned to true north. But if you follow the East side, you find that it is also aligned exactly to true north. Lines of longitude converge at the poles, and get further apart at the equator. So, not only is the Great Pyramid an exact model of the Earth’s dimensions. It demonstrates that the Builders understood coordinate location on a globe.

But, there’s still more… If we take the perimeter of the Great Pyramid. We find that it is the exact distance that the earth rotates in 2 seconds. This demonstrates an understanding of the Earth’s rotational cycle. And, if we take 2 and multiply it by the ratio (1/43,200) which was used in the construction of the pyramid; then we get the Diameter of the Sun.

Taken together, this not only demonstrates that the Ancients understood the size and location of the Sun relative to the Earth, the dimensions of the Earth, the Earth’s rotation around the Sun, and the idea of time as we measure it here on Earth; But it also demonstrates that the Ancients were able to “encode“ or rather record this knowledge in a stone structure through the use of the noblest of sciences …geometry.
